If you’d asked me years ago if I would consider anything meat free, I would probably laugh and go back to inhaling my broth of meat. But now, I’ve grown up a little bit (I like to think), I love trying new things and as they say ‘Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it’. I completely agree, I can’t really bash something until I have indeed tried it.
I was kindly asked to try some of Goodlife Foods‘ range and I will be documenting my experience throughout the rest of April. They want to demonstrate that going meat free doesn’t have to be dull in the slightest.
The Goodlife
If you’re not familiar with Goodlife Foods, they have a range of veggy sausages, kievs and burgers which have no no artificial additives, preservatives or colourings. They want you know that vegetables aren’t just a decoration to your meal, they are essential and you can have fun with them too!
The first product I tried on what social media now calls #MeatFreeMonday was the frozen Green Bean, Spinach & Wensleydale Sausages. Just a little warning that I’m no Gordon Ramsay in the kitchen but I LOVE food so I knew I was going to be out of my comfort zone when trying these.
I popped them in the oven for around 20 to 25 minutes and then tucked in. At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about them as I’d never tried a sausage that didn’t contain meat before. They reminded me of spring rolls but with an infusion of cheese (which was an unexpected and lovely touch). Not only that, they were quite filling so a two would be an ample serving alongside something else on your plate. I think my only concern was the casing which didn’t particularly taste of anything?
The day after
The next day I actually took some for my lunch at work and they were such a light alternative to some of the food I usually eat. I would love to try these in summertime at a barbecue or if they taste any flavourful being grilled. Since writing this post, I even discovered a few more tasty ways to enjoy them…
Meat free doesn’t just have to be blades of grass and rice crackers after all!

I love the burgers with cashew nuts in them, cook ’em, chuck ’em in a wrap with lettuce and vegan mayo, done!
