One thing I love about the realm of travel when I’m not travelling is creating wish lists, itineraries and bucket lists about the places I want to go and the things I want to do when I get there. My last list was about Iceland (not the supermarket) and whilst I’m still longing to go, my head is in hot mode. I’m wanting to be on a beach, complaining about having sand in awkward places and ordering one too many cocktails. Lanzarote sounds like the perfect place for this right?
But there is more to this beautiful island than beaches, so here are few reasons I want to visit Lanzarote:
Jardin de Cactus
A garden full of cacti? Surely no one would want to go here voluntarily in fear of being stung but Jardin de Cactus is my dream. I’ve seen anything like it and whilst I have been to the Grand Canyon, the cacti were spread out (as they should be). Lets just hope there are no pricks.
Famara Beach
Whilst I am yet to try watersports on my travels yet, there is something about Famara beach that makes me wanna invest in surfing lessons. The beach area is unique as it curves and I can only imagine how beautiful it would be seen from the water or above. Not only that, one of my favourite Spanish movies ‘Broken Embraces’ was shot here, so perhaps I can make my own Insta-movie too?!
El Charco De San Gines
My most recent trip was to Venice and Verona and I love when destinations have their own version of the city of love. London has its own version in Maida Vale, but so does Lanzarote, known as ‘El Charco De San Gines’. Located in Lanzarote’s capital, Arrecife, this beautiful marina area is famed for clear water, beautiful boats and even better food which won’t break the bank like the real Venice.
Papas Arrugadas
There is so much more to Spanish cuisine than Sangria and Paella, and there are some unique dishes served in the cluster of Canary Islands. Papas Arrugadas is just one of them and essentially they’re just locally grown Canarian potatoes but boiled in sea salt in their skins. I don’t know about you but these sounds magical and make a change from cheesy chips any day.
Okay so I know I mentioned that there is more to Lanzarote than beaches, but Playa Quemada is famed for its black beach. Truly proof that this island emanates from volcanic activity and how unique it is.
Have you been to Lanzarote? Do you have any suggestions of things to sea, eat and do on this wondrous island?
To me, Lanzarote always had this image of being a ‘party island’ but once you stray away from stereotypes and dig a little deeper, you will discover there is so much more. More than a beach and cocktails, there is history, happiness and culture.
